What are futon mattresses made of?

Answered By Editor

Like any conventional mattress, futon mattresses are now made of foam cores wrapped in a soft fabric. Some have springs, some do not. Foam cores with cotton usually last over 5 years while those that are wrapped in wool are more firm, lasting up to 10 years.

Some people prefer a more organic route. They will go for the more natural fibers and cotton over the poly foam. The obvious advantage is that these organic futon mattresses are chemical-free and provide a more traditional futon experience. The disadvantage is that cotton futon mattresses have a shorter lifespan when compared to foam futons. They also give less support. It's really a matter of preference.
