What is the history of futons?
Answered By Editor
The term futon is actually a Japanese word
which means "bedding." The Japanese first
called it shikibuton to explain the actual
mattress part of the bedding. Futons were
thin, about two to three inches and were made
of long staple cotton. Every year, people
would take their beddings to the futtoniers
to remove the cover, wash the cotton and
reform the shikibuton and its cover.
It was only in 1970's that the futon was
finally introduced to America. Used to
conventional mattresses, the Americans made
the futon mattresses thicker. Evolving over
time, the futon is used as both a couch and
as a bed.
