Because the frame is usually the most expensive part of the purchase, the type of futon frame will ultimately determine how much you will spend. Of course, the type of mattress is right up there with the frame and can significantly increase the price of your futon. Domestic hardwood frames such as oak or maple tend to be the most expensive materials. Imported hard wood frames, usually coming from South America or Asia may be more economical and may be comparable in quality and durability. Pine and metal frames are more economical than hardwood frames but are generally a lower quality. They may also lack the elegance of fine wood. Beware of discount stores that sell cheap "oak" frames which are really only partially oak or contain laminated wood. How do you know? Here's a tip: if the store displays a "Futon Association International" sign, then oak means solid oak.
